There are numerous skin diseases directly related to pregnancy. One of them is melasma, which is called pregnancy mask (maculation= staining in the form of a mask on the skin). Melasma develops in 45-75% of pregnant women and hyperpigmentation (spots) in 90%.
In addition to the hormonal changes due to pregnancy, sun, genetic predisposition, use of birth control pills are among the causes of melasma formation.
Sun lights are the most important factor in melasma development. Melasma particullary affects the face, neck and forearm areas exposed to the sun. Melasma is a difficult-to-treat maculation problem due to its resistant and repetitive properties.
Therefore, the use of sunscreen is highly recommended to prevent the formation and deterioration of melasma. Broad spectrum sunscreens that block not only UVB rays but also UVA rays should be used. It should also be paid attention that the sunscreen used is suitable for pregnant women.
