Acne is a common skin problem that results in blockage of hair follicles and sebaceous glands (oil-producing glands under the skin), causing acne breakouts.
If the body produces a lot of sebum (oil that keeps our skin moist), dead skin cells can get trapped inside the pores and cause white or blackheads. Bacteria living in the skin also remain trapped in the pore, causing inflamed pimples to appear. It is usually seen on the face, forehead, chest, upper back and shoulders. Although acne can affect people of all ages, it is most common among teenagers.
Sun has two kinds of effects on acne symptoms.
- Blemish formation due to inflammation after acne
As a result of inflammatory processes, injuries, acne formation, etc. occurring on the skin, excessive color pigment production occurs from the melanocyte cells that give the skin its color. Overproduced color pigments accumulate on these damaged surfaces of the skin and as a result, blemishes are observed on the skin.
Acne-related spotting in people with acne lesions causes anxiety in patients and these pigmentation problems sometimes last up to 1 year, and sometimes up to 5 years.
It is also known that sun lights cause the sebaceous glands which are responsible for oil production in the skin to grow and produce more oil. Excessive oil production also increases acne complaints. This vicious circle can be confronted with patients as a blemish.
2. Products used in the treatment of acne cause sun sensitivity
Some drugs used in the treatment of acne cause the skin to become sensitive by drying the sebaceous glands completely. In this case, the skin becomes much more sensitive to UV rays and may show sensitivity reactions to light.
