Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatoy skin disease that especially affects the face, accompanied by redness (erythema), telangiectasias (excessive vascular appearance caused by increased, superficial and / or widening of the vessels in the skin), acne breakouts.
The cause of rosacea is currently unknown. Today, the vascular system, climatic exposure (UV lights), chemicals, eating habits, anomalies in hair follicles, microbial and genetic factors are thought to be involved. Rosacea, which progresses further if left untreated, can form protrusions and pits on the skin surface. In even more severe cases, there is excessive tissue development, especially in the nose area, which may cause changes in the nose and facial structure (this condition is called rhinophyma).
- It is especially seen in light skinned people.
- It can affect a part of the society up to 10%.
- The onset of rosacea is usually between the ages of 20 and 50; it is more common in women than men, but more severe forms are more common in men.
Under normal conditions, our skin gives a controlled response to environmental stimuli (UV exposure, temperature, air pollution). However, in rosaceous patients, an excessive defense response occurs in the body against environmental factors. As a result of many scientific studies on the relationship between rosacea and UV exposure, several mechanisms have been found for this relationship:
It has been shown that immune system elements, which are known to cause widening of the vessels (vasodilation) in the skin, are generated more in patients with rosacea compared to healthy individuals.
Rocacea is not only an inflammatory skin disease, but also reported to be an ongoing disease with increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant capacity caused by exposure to UV lights.
An increased oxidative stress resulted in exposure to UV lights enhance the enzyme activity of proteins which destruct in the skin as a result it exerts effects such as skin inflammation, redness and deterioration in vascular functions
In addition, patients with rosacea should be very careful in choosing cosmetic products due to the extreme sensitivity of their skin. These individuals are particularly prone to irritation caused by sunscreen. The fact that sunscreens contain moisturizers such as dimethicone, panthenol and non-irritating substances will help reduce their problems. In addition, it is known that physical filters such as Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide are better tolerated by these patients.
